This morning I set out quite early. In the first town I passed through I spotted a pilgrim outside an albergue. He had two children’s push carts that he was packing up. Last Camino I saw a woman doing that and thought it was extraordinary. Then a bit further down the way I ran into my new pilgrim friend Alice. As we sat and had breakfast she asked if I had seen the family. Then proceeded to tell me that it was a family with 5 children under 6 years old. One was still breast feeding!
A bit later in the afternoon I camped out at the top of a huge hill because I could go no further at the moment. That’s when I heard the singing. First I see the father pushing the double wide push cart and tell him buen Camino. The cutest little boy looks out of the cart and says “hola”. Then just a moment later the mother comes pushing another double wide. She and the children are singing a happy song. I was astounded at the parents. I could not imagine doing this journey with small children.
Later in the day as I finally made it into the town I am staying tonight I saw them in the corner of the square. As I got close I heard the father say “one, two, three”. At that moment the whole family burst into a unified cheer of “BUEN CAMINO”. It was just the boost I need to help me make the last steep steep steep hill to the albergue.
This post brought tears to my eyes. (At first I thought you were going to say they were singing “The Hills are Alive With the Sound of Music”! ;^)
That came later!!
WOW! You are doing a great job sharing in your journey. Thank you. I love it.
I am happy you are enjoying it.
